Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Nationalist ideologies play a pivotal role in fostering unity and collective identity, particularly in multi-ethnic and diverse societies. In Birnin Kebbi LGA, Kebbi State, independence day celebrations provide a platform for expressing and reinforcing nationalist ideals. These events, marked by cultural displays, speeches, and communal activities, aim to promote national cohesion and pride. Nationalist ideologies emphasize shared history, values, and aspirations, serving as a unifying force amidst socio-political and ethnic diversity (Abubakar & Sule, 2024; Umar et al., 2023). However, the extent to which these celebrations genuinely promote unity in Birnin Kebbi LGA depends on their inclusivity and representation of diverse groups. This study investigates the role of nationalist ideologies in shaping independence day celebrations in Birnin Kebbi, examining their effectiveness in promoting unity and addressing the challenges of fostering a collective identity in a diverse community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of nationalist ideologies to promote unity, independence day celebrations in Birnin Kebbi LGA often face criticisms of exclusion and superficiality. Research highlights that while such events can foster temporary displays of solidarity, their long-term impact on unity is limited without sustained engagement and inclusivity (Aliyu & Ahmed, 2024; Bala & Mohammed, 2023). In Birnin Kebbi, challenges such as ethnic divisions, political bias, and inadequate representation undermine the role of these celebrations in fostering a cohesive identity. This study aims to explore how nationalist ideologies influence independence day celebrations in Birnin Kebbi LGA, assessing their contribution to unity and identifying ways to enhance their impact.
